Frontal Temporal Dementia Consortium (FTDC)In 1996, the RRI brought together a multidisciplinary group of experts from four countries (Canada, France, Italy, U.K., and U.S.A.) with the objective of developing common standards for the investigation and assessment of frontal temporal dementia. This workshop resulted in the establishment of an international set of criteria for the diagnosis of this disorder. Specifically, the criteria specified core and supportive features for the three prototypic syndromes of frontotemporal lobar degeneration, which includes frontotemporal dementia, progressive nonfluent aphasia, and semantic dementia. The development of the criteria was instrumental in improving the clinical recognition of and providing the framework for research into these disorders; this is significant considering that frontotemporal lobar degeneration accounts for a substantial portion of the cases of primary degenerative dementia occurring before the age of 65.
